The Suffragettes
I recently watched “Suffragettes with Lucy Worsley.”which was a Christmas present from my Grandma and Grandpa (thank you!).
I had already heard about the suffragettes and have taken an interest in them; I have read the My Stories book on them and heard about their fight for the vote in various places. I have also watched other documentaries presented by Lucy Worsley and have read her books for children. In fact I was once lucky enough to meet her in person, at a talk she was giving about her book “Eliza Rose.”
In this documentary, Lucy Worsley dresses-up and plays the part of a suffragette, as she shows us what the WSPU (Women’s Social and Political Union, the main group of suffragettes) were really doing and reveals the suffragettes in a whole new light. The documentary is divided into parts, like, for example ‘Arson’ or ‘Black Friday’.
For me this DVD was a real eye-opener; it showed me how fierce and determined the suffragettes really were. And it told me even more about dates than I already knew.
It is also interesting to wonder what would have happened to the suffragettes if the First World War hadn’t came along? And if I had been a suffragette, what would I have done? These are questions that we will never know the answer to. I am just inspired by how much strength and courage those women had, and I know that I will never take my vote for granted!
