Packaging for milk
I am really pleased that people are looking into what we can use to package milk. Unless it’s in a glass bottle, milk is almost always packaged in plastic. And until recently, I hadn’t seen anyone doing anything about it.
Milk is a tricky one to package. It needs to be transported and kept fresh — and it needs to taste fresh. Glass is one option, but some some people worry about the amount of water that is used in making glass.
Recently, we’ve started to get milk that comes in a packaging that I’d never seen before. The milk comes from Daylesford, an organic farm. They care about packaging and they’re always trying to improve. They’re particularly proud of their milk packaging.
It’s made from Calymer, and contains chalk.
It takes a quarter of the energy to manufacture compared to a plastic bottle.
It generates 72% less production waste.
It generates 93% less water pollution.
And they say it can be recycled.
Also the milk is non-homogenised, and it tastes good!
It would be better if we could use no plastic at all, and people lived for a long time without needing any plastic. But, given how we live today, it’s not practical for us each to get milk from our own cow. I don’t have the answer how to live entirely without plastic today. But this is a good start.
