Developing Characters.

My best friend and I recently did a creative writing exercise on our characters from our books that we’re writing right now answering some questions that Giulietta M Spudich put forward on her blog ‘Story Club — Writing Strong Characters.’ and then we added some of our own questions to answer to! I’m going to share these questions with you in case they help you with any of your past/present/future character(s).

The original questions were:

What is your character’s greatest strength?

What is your character’s greatest struggle?

My Mind-Map for the character of Minerva (AKA Minnie) Ashley.

What do they want?

What stands in their way?

What are three things your character likes?

What are three things they DO NOT like?

The ones we added were:

What are two formative events in their lives so far?

What words/phrases do they use a lot?

If they were an animal what would they be (what they would choose to be, what you think they would be)?

My Mind-Map for the character of Sebastian Summerset.

How would they relate to you?

How do they deal with conflict/arguments?

What is their preferred sense?

These were some really good, thought provoking questions that helped me dig out some aspects of my character that I’d never properly considered before. Hopefully they do the same for others!
